Who this is for: Makers, home bakers, artists and small-batch producers selling their own work.

Made-to-order breaks standard ecommerce assumptions

Most ecommerce tooling assumes stock sitting on a shelf, ready to dispatch tomorrow. Handmade work often does not: quantities are tiny, some pieces are unique, and lead times are measured in days or weeks rather than hours.

The practical consequence is that clear communication matters more than automation. A customer waiting three weeks for a commissioned piece needs to know that upfront, not discover it after paying.

What helps

  • Accurate stock counts, including one-of-a-kind pieces set to a quantity of one so they cannot be sold twice.
  • Photography-led product pages — for handmade work the images do most of the selling, so multiple images per product matter.
  • Description space to state lead time, materials, dimensions and care, which is where handmade buyers make their decision.
  • Categories that group work by collection, material or occasion.
  • Order statuses that reflect a longer process, so "in progress" is visible rather than silent.

Pricing handmade work honestly

Makers systematically underprice, usually by treating their own time as free. Cost your materials, then add your hours at a rate you would accept from anyone else, then add packaging, payment fees and an allowance for the occasional breakage in transit.

If the resulting number feels high, that is information about your market rather than about your pricing. Selling below cost is a hobby with extra steps.

Where we are not the right answer

  • There is no made-to-order configurator for buyer-supplied customisation options at checkout.
  • We do not handle deposits or part-payments for commissioned work.
  • Image limits are per plan — two on Starter, three on Growth, five on Pro. If your work needs a dozen angles per piece, check this fits before committing.
  • We are not a marketplace and do not bring you an existing audience of craft buyers, which a craft marketplace would.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell one-of-a-kind pieces?

Yes. Set the stock quantity to one and the product stops accepting orders once it sells, which prevents the same piece being sold twice.

How do I handle long lead times for made-to-order work?

State the lead time clearly in the product description, and use order statuses to show progress so the customer can see the piece is in hand rather than forgotten. Most disputes with made-to-order work come from silence rather than from the wait itself.
